When to Seek Emergency Foot Care

You should seek immediate podiatric care if you experience:

  • Severe foot or ankle pain
  • Sudden swelling or inability to walk
  • A suspected fracture or sprain
  • Deep cuts or wounds on the foot
  • Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage
  • A painful ingrown toenail with swelling or infection
  • Sudden changes in skin color or temperature in the foot
  • Diabetic foot wounds or ulcers

Prompt treatment can help prevent complications and promote faster healing.

Common Foot & Ankle Emergencies We Treat

Our podiatry team is experienced in diagnosing and treating a wide range of urgent conditions.

Foreign Objects in the Foot

Stepping on glass, metal, or sharp objects may require medical removal and infection prevention

Severe Gout Attack in the Foot

Sudden intense pain, swelling, and redness—often in the big toe—may require urgent treatment.

Foot and Ankle Injuries

Sports injuries, falls, and accidents can lead to sprains, strains, fractures, and tendon injuries. We evaluate the injury and recommend the appropriate treatment to stabilize and protect the foot or ankle.

Severe Heel or Arch Pain

Sudden or severe heel pain may indicate conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendon injuries, or stress fractures that require prompt evaluation.

Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail can become extremely painful and infected if left untreated. We provide safe, effective treatment to relieve pain and prevent recurrence.

Infections

Foot infections may develop from cuts, wounds, or nail problems. Early treatment is important to prevent the infection from spreading, especially for patients with diabetes or circulation issues.

Diabetic Foot Emergencies

Patients with diabetes should seek immediate care for foot ulcers, wounds, redness, swelling, or signs of infection. Early treatment helps prevent serious complications.

What to Do During a Foot Emergency

If you experience a foot or ankle emergency:

  1. Call our office immediately for guidance and scheduling.
  2. Limit weight bearing on the affected foot if walking is painful.
  3. Elevate the foot and apply ice for swelling if appropriate.
  4. Keep wounds clean and covered until you can be evaluated.

If the injury is severe or involves significant trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, or loss of circulation, seek care at the nearest emergency room.
