A tophus is a deposit of crystallized uric acid normally found just under the skin. Commonly they occur on the toes and around the ankles. When small, they are not always obvious but appear as moveable lumps. Larger tophi can be seen as whitish nodules.

Symptoms of Gouty Tophi

Symptoms usually include a painful, slow growing mass, infections and occasionally, joint disfigurement.

Treatment of Gouty Tophi

Reducing uric acid levels in the patient's blood will gradually cause tophi to dissolve. Occasionally surgical excision is required to remove the mass. Always consult your doctor before trying any medication to treat this condition.
